Who We Are
Sophia Hunter was born when founder, Jim MacKay, noticed that finding home decor manufactured in the U.S. was extremely difficult. He didn’t think it made sense to purchase home decor that was manufactured somewhere else on the planet and had literally traveled half-way around the world to get to us. He felt we should be able to make products locally, with local materials, and with local people.
Sophia Hunter was modeled on Detroit and all it embodies. Detroit is an industrial city. It’s a gritty city. It's full of auto companies and industrial manufacturing. It's a city that makes things from steel. But it’s also a city with heart. A city with soul. A city that’s full of creativity. Think of all the music that came from Detroit. Everything from Motown to Techno.
Detroit had more than it’s share of setbacks. Plant closings, changes in the global auto market, massive population decline, mayoral scandals, the bankruptcy of the school district and the city itself.
But most don’t realize the great comeback Detroit is making. Detroit is in an exciting renaissance period.
In Detroit, the future is still being written.
